Why Won’t Your Garage Door Stay Closed?

Why Won’t Your Garage Door Stay Closed?

If you’re frustrated because your garage door won’t stay down, you’re not alone! In fact, garage doors not staying closed is one of the more common garage door issues homeowners face. If you’re looking for a solution to keep your garage door closed, look no further than our list below; we’ll dive into the two most common reasons your garage door isn’t staying closed and how to fix the causes.

Issue #1: Garage Door Partly Closes, Then Reverses

If your garage door is only partly closing and then reversing, it’s most likely caused by the garage door’s safety eyes. The safety eyes are a standard garage door feature used to prevent your garage door from closing on top of you, your children or your belongings, by sending a signal to the garage door to retract when the eyes sense an obstruction. As time goes on however, these sensors can become misaligned or dirty and send false reversal signals to your door.

You can try to fix the safety eyes by cleaning them with a soft cloth; they’re easy to access and should be located near the floor on each side of the garage door opening. If cleaning doesn’t work, they’re most likely misaligned and you’ll need to contact a professional to adjust the sensors.

Issue #2: Garage Fully Closes, Then Reverses

If you’re garage is closing as it should be, and then reversing a few seconds later, you’re facing an issue with your opener limits. The opener limits are the directions given to the garage door that tell it when it’s fully close and flush to the floor. If your opener limits aren’t programmed correctly however, your door may think it still has a distance to go before it’s fully closed, even though it actually is closed. The safety eyes will then view the floor as an obstruction and instruct the garage door to reverse to avoid the “obstruction” of the floor.

The solution to this issue is to recalibrate your opener limits. Instructions to recalibrate the door limits should be in your owner’s manual, but you can always contact a professional for assistance.

If you’ve tried all of the DIY solutions to fix the problem of your garage door not staying closed to no avail, it’s time to give the professionals a call. Contact our experts at Andrews Overhead Doors today for all of your garage door needs!

I’m glad you mentioned that your door might not stay closed because it needs to be recalibrated. I have no idea how to do that, so it might be a good idea to try and get someone to do it for me. I’ll have to do some research on how to do it and hire someone if I can’t do it myself.

My garage door has been having a hard time staying closed, and I’m not sure what to do. It makes sense that I would want to get a professional to take a look at it for me. They would be able to figure out exactly what is going on with it.
