Standard Garage Door Sizes

Standard Garage Door Sizes

When it comes to garage doors, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option, but there are a couple of standard garage door sizes that you can choose from. To determine which garage door size is the best fit for your home, you first need to determine if your family needs a single car garage, two-car garage or a garage for an RV. Not sure what sizes these garage doors are? Read on below!

Single-Car Garage Door Sizes

While most single-car garage doors are 7 feet tall, their widths can vary from 8 to 10 feet wide. 8-foot wide garage doors are the most common, and they provide enough room for a car and minimal storage. Looking for more room? Consider choosing an 8-foot tall garage door.

With more and more people owning SUVs and trucks, taller garage doors continue to grow in popularity. In fact, you’ll now find that 8-foot tall garage doors are common in new home builds and home remodels. Not only will an 8-foot tall garage door allow you to fit trucks and SUVs into your garage, but it will also leave you plenty of room for storage.

To recap, historically the most popular garage door was 8’x7’, but now more people are selecting 8’x8’ garage doors to fit larger vehicles.

Two-Car Garage Door Sizes

For larger vehicles, more than one vehicle, or for extra storage, two-car garages will be your best bet. Double-car garage doors generally range from 12-18 feet wide, with 16 feet in width being the most common size. Like single-car garage doors, two-car garage doors are typically 7 to 8 feet in height, with the 8-foot tall garage doors becoming more popular because of the extra room they provide.

A lot of people prefer two-car garages even if they only plan on parking one car inside the garage. That’s because two-car garages can accommodate a larger family’s lifestyle and provide room for SUVs, children’s bicycles and toys, and additional storage.

RV Garage Door Sizes

RVs are tall, so RV garage doors need to be taller! RV garage door heights range from 10 to 16 feet tall, with a 12-foot garage door being tall enough to accommodate a standard RV. Unfortunately, most homes don’t come standard with RV-sized garage doors, so if you plan on adding one, you will need to work with an architect and contractor to ensure your home can support the addition.

Now that you understand the differences between single-car, two-car and RV garage doors, which one is the best for your home? Your choice is typically going to be determined by the size of your vehicles, the amount of storage you need and what size garage door works best for your home’s architecture. It’s pretty good to know that a standard garage door is usually around 7 ft tall. My brother is building a new house right now and he is trying to find his new garage doors. I think it’s a good idea to do a double-garage door so that he can fit more things inside.
